2/4/09 CLASS NOTES IMMIGRATION MOVIE, PART 1 - processed thousands of immigrants everyday - Ellis Island was the Isle of Hope - Only 13 million immigrants were turned away - NY was the heart of America, Ellis Island was the gateway - A ticket for a boat ride to Ellis was $12 a person - Immigrants shared a common goal: survival - Recreated their identities - They chose to immigrate - 4.5 million immigrants fled to the U.S. - 1855, government owned fort was turned into a inspection station for the immigrants - It became the primary place until the 19 th century - Government was worried about health and financial means - Perception (categories of people) started 1890s - Jan. 1, 1892, Ellis Island opened - June 1897, Ellis Island building burned to the ground - 1900, the new Ellis Island building opened - They were unorganized - The purpose of a lot of immigrants came was for a better life - Journey to America was for liberty, have a better life and achieve the American dream - Many of the world’s countries were in an economic boom
