INTRO TO LAWSO 1 – 10/23/08 Black Responses to Racism : Separatist, black nationalist, afrocentrist. Nation of Islam : Founded in Detroit in 1930, led by Elijah Muhammad from 1935-1975. under his authority, the NOI was socially conservative and separatist, with strong programs in poor areas and prisons. Malcolm X converted in prison, became a minister who dramatically increased NOIs following due to his charisma, brilliant speeches, and advocacy of militant self-defense. He broke with NOI in 1964 and founded a conventional Islamic institution and embraced a more pan-african non- afrocentric ideology. Integrationism : Ideology : problems of racism are caused by irrational racial consciousness that manifest as prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination. Integrationists and Lingering Inequalities : Linear Progress : teleological notion of social change from worse to better. Exceptional Temporary Remedies to Push Progress : affirmative action conceived by liberals as rectifying past injustices and promoting the integrationist
