Largest population, 1.3 Billion People. Second largest economy, but one third f the population lives in poverty. Two-thirds rural/one-third urban. Densely populated cities. Same size as the US, but with five times the number of people— and 90% of the population lives on 17% of the land. Fairly homogeneous, 7% minority population. Political Development : The Imperial Era (1766 BC – 1911) o Longest recorded history of any country in the world. Nationalism and Chaos (1911 – 1949). The Communist Era (1949 -) o The 1950 Mao’s land redistribution to 300M peasants. o 1957 – allows public discussion of China’s problems. o 1958 Political System Unitary, centralized state. All power rests with the Chinese Communist Party (CPP); it has “a monopoly on government”. Personal relationships are more important than formal offices, factions. Elections and Parties
