POLI SCI 6 – 11/24/08 THE LESS DEVELOPED COUNTRIES (LDCs) – Mostly in Africa and Central America “Individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made.” -Roosevelt Compare Iran to other “oil” countries (paper). Common Characteristics : Very Poor – the vast majority of population are vulnerable (malnourished, ill, undereducated—and young). Economic reliance on one of a few primary commodities for export (to rich countries) . Political Instability : o Immature institutions o One party rule/one person rule/corruption o High level of violence o Military intervention Economic Comparisons : “An American having the average income of the bottom US decile is better off than 2/3 of world population.” Explanations for Poverty in LDCs : Modernization Theory : o LDCs are on the same path as the rich countries, development is a matter of time. o
