COMM 1 – 2/17/09 ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION An Organization is : System of individuals Typically organized in a formal hierarchy. Pursuing multiple goals. Within complex communication networks . Flow of Messages : Downward communication o How do “bosses” communicate? o Often take communication for granted. Usually trained in another area. o Tend to rely on official channels Requests, orders, guidelines, policy statements. o Downward distortion Selective exposure,, --attention, --perception, --retention, --action Upward Communication o How do subordinates deliver messages? o Upward distortion Condensed, simplified – give the summary version; simplifying ideas that are fairly complex. Standardized, idealized, synthesized – turn it into the proper format so that it is consistent with the other parts of the organization; message gets transformed, sugarcoated into something better than it was before (each level doesn’t want to anger the level above
