Types: o Informative speaking (e.g., formal education, training seminars, company presentations) o Motivational speaking (e.g., sermons, self-help) o Persuasive speaking (e.g., political speeches, TV/radio “punditry”) Changing their opinion from one thing or another; get them to act on something they already believe in – looking for some type of change, in general; involves overcoming resistance. What Makes Persuasion Effective Some important factors: o Who or what is delivering the message? (The source) (e.g., expert, mom, celebrity spokesperson) o The audience(s) Who is listening/watching? – those who ignore this get negligible results. o The Message(s) What strategies or appeals are being used? (e.g., humor, fear, evidence)
