Shostakovich o 1906-1975 o born before revolution o educated and trained under Soviet system o piano lessons at 9 o St. Petersburg Conservatory at 1919 – end of their reign as best conservatory Had Glazunov etc. o 1923 – finished piano studies o graduates at 17 o 1924-25 – writes first symphony – influenced by Tchai, Scriabin, Proko , ( Debussy, Gershwin - normal in 1920’s) premiered in 1926 when Stalin was coming into real power first important musician composer to write a new work that was totally Soviet (trained in Soviet system) Stalin used him as example that the Soviet system could produce high art that was not harsh International celebrity at 20 Not yet completely found his own voice 4 movements with normal breakdown of movements more percussion than Tchaikovsky (including piano) tonal – in a key (not like Scriabin) rhythm – very rhythmic elements (not like Scriabin) socialist realist music
