Critique Our Changing Environment 10/5/2009 Pine Beetles The main issue concerning these Pine Beetles is that they are attacking the trees in Colorado’s mountainous regions, destroying a large area of this natural habitat. There are many opinions as to what to do in order to control this outbreak of Mountain Pine Beetles (MPB), both long term and short term. The true Question is, whether or not our methods of fighting these pine beetles will be effective or if the destruction will continue to be this detrimental to our environment. Clearly, this has become more then just a simple issue, instead more of a state of emergency in my mind. There really isn’t any controversy with opinions concerning the fact that this is a horrific infestation and it must be dealt with immediately. However, the disagreement of beliefs comes when looking at how to control these outbreaks in the most effective and environmentally friendly way possible. Trees that are not growing vigorously due to old age, crowding, poor growing conditions, drought, naturally damaged, root disease and other such causes are most likely to be attacked. For the most part, the trees that are in good health and growing in strong environments are not becoming part of this problem. For short term controls there are things such as sprays or
