FEEDBACK Inputs and outputs - In a system where transformation occurs, there are: o Inputs o Outputs - Inputs: the result of the environment’s influence on the system - Outputs: the influence of the system on the environment - Separated by a duration of time as in: o Before and after o Past and present Feedback loops - In every feedback loop: o Information about the result of a transformation or an action is sent back to the input of the system in the form of input data - Positive feedback: if the new data facilitates and accelerates the transformation in the same direction as the preceding results o Effects are cumulative o Exponential growth or decline o Leads to divergent behavior Indefinite expansion or explosion (a running away toward infinity) Total blocking of activities (a running away toward zero) o Snowball effect – each plus involves another plus EX: chain reaction, inflation, population explosion, proliferation of cancer cells o Minuses can also lead to minuses = events coming to a standstill
