05/02/2008 08:31:00 Nationalism, Democratization, and State Power Puzzle: Why is there more state power and more democracy? o States develop as was to extract wealth for military purposes. This revenue was used to build armies- this was a coercive  process. o States centralize power. They grew by eliminating those who resisted the state.   o Successful early states are absolute monarchs. Ex: Louis XIV, King of France, “I am the state.” Growth of State Power Since 1800 o Increasing military power. Think: Battle of Agincourt-> Battle of Waterloo-> Battle of the  Somme (increases with each battle- each battle gets larger). o Increasing revenue extraction Taxes were imposed during times of war. Income Tax-> Britain during Napoleonic War, and US the  Civil War (but post-civil war 1913 it was made legal. But  after the world wars the tax increased immensely.)  (before 8:47 some sort of effect where it goes up and  stays up….?) [Ratchet Effect]  { http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratchet_effect} This pattern comes from people articulating more  demands from the gov’t, must pay off debt, (8:49) o Increasing intervention in economy. There’s also an increasing amount of democracies.
