God/Devil/Charismatic Terms All three terms fall under Richard Weaver’s “Ultimate Terms.” Weaver defines ultimate terms as “simply a name capable of entering into a proposition.” A God/Devil term is an expression about which all other expressions are ranked as subordinate and serving dominations and powers. The term also dictates the force or strength of all subordinate terms. o God terms represent those expressions with positive connotations (feelings) and are attractive. Examples include: Progress Facts Science History o Devil terms are on the opposite side of the spectrum and represent expressions that repulse audiences. Examples include: Un-American Fascist Ignorance Charismatic terms are like God/Devil terms but have no referent to ground it. It is rhetorical only through common consent. These are terms that, despite having no referent, carry appealing and compelling meanings in their historical context. o Examples include: Freedom Democracy Weaver’s ideas were rhetorically significant because his hierarchical view of rhetoric raised questions of ethics and humanism within rhetoric. Weaver believed rhetoric was sermonistic in the sense that certain terms carried more influence than others and could be efficiently used. “Ultimate Terms” remain rhetorically significant with the large amount of mass
