Prof. McClellan COMM 3210 Unit 9 Unit 9: Place, Space, and Mobility With all the technological advancements that have emerged over the years, our social networks appear to have become more interconnected. However, while it may seem as though electronic communication has helped to maintain as well as contribute to closer more intimate relationships, it has also created an “absent presence” in all of our lives. This absent presence can be described as when “one is physically present but is absorbed by a technologically mediated world of elsewhere”. [Gergen, 227]. The ever popular social networking website facebook has perpetuated the problem of absent presence in our society today. Nearly everyone I know has a facebook account and while it does have its positive aspects in maintaining relationships, it also results in the problem of absent presence.
