EDUC 3013 Traditions Paper The Problems Relating to Our Education System In America, the education system is always being reformed, and is under scrutiny. We demand a lot out of schools, because we expect them to give our children the best possible education. We debate however what the best possible education is composed of. Everyone has different ideas on how to reform and improve this education for our youth and the future of our country, which developed different theories on education. There are four theories about education, which conflict with one another, but all have made an impact on our education today. The humanist and progressive theories both believe that education is the great equalizer for the differences among people in our society, but they differ on the teaching approach. The social efficiency believes that the first two theories ignore the fact that our society is engaged in a caste-like structured education system, which predetermines the roles children will play in society. The social meliorist/critical pedagogy goes further into the ideas of the social efficiency theory, offering ideas and solutions to the caste education problem. Looking further into these theories will help to uncover the difficulties and problems of our education system. Personally I believe that each theory has its pros and cons in our society, and ultimately a mixture of all theories is necessary. The humanist theory describes education as the traditional model of education in our country. In this method of teaching, “schooling amounts to the transmission of a body of knowledge from the teacher (who has it) to the child (who doesn’t), a process that relies on getting the child to listen to lectures, read textbooks, and often to practice skills by completing worksheets”(Kohn 3). information from the teacher to the student in a very structure based form. The teachers have a dominant position in the classroom, and are expected to teach the curriculum given to them. The students are expected to sit in their desks, listen to the teacher’s lectures and to memorize the material in order to get the right answer on evaluations. Teachers recognize that students are different, but there is a uniform learning, which encourages students to realize these differences and accommodate to them. Traditional schools have set standards, which both the student and the teachers need to uphold. Teachers are required to get through a certain amount of material at a set time. This requires the student to understand the material in that amount of time, and expects that every student will move along at the same pace. Traditional schools also have standardized tests to insure the progress of the student. Parts of this theory are still accepted today, and used in our modern classrooms. Both Chester Finn and E.D.
