7 July 200 Professor Cathy Preston ENGL 3856 “Fairy Tales for the Soul” Fairy Tales have been regarded as infantilized and formulaic stories on the exterior. But within the story remains “… the underlying universal truth” (Einfeld, p.194) which has the power to resonate with the reader and convey much fuller meanings than the tale might appear to present. In “Fairy Tales are Cathartic,” fairy tale writer Jane Yolen comments on the effectiveness of the universal truths embedded within the fairy tale. One of my favorite artists and scholars, Noel Huntley said, “Good art will resonate with the fundamental and archetypal states of the soul.” The fairy tale has the same effect upon its audience and their souls. In “Fairy Tales Promote Self Discovery,” child psychologist, Bruno Bettelheim “…describes fairy tales as metaphors for the dangerous journey on the path to greater self knowledge” (Einfeld p.168). Both writers argue for the fairy tale’s ability to provide the reader with a path of self-discovery. Bettelheim disputes that the classic fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel enables children to experience through Hansel and Gretel’s trials what it means to be independent. The children are forced to take matters into their own hands and confront the bad aspects of life in order to overcome the witch. “Like all children, Hansel and Gretel must learn not only to become able to fend for themselves, but also to meet the dark aspects of life” (Einfeld p.169). The children are forced to learn about the world by the situation they are cast into. Children can find this narrative to be liberating for their
