4 June 2007 Professor Bruce Bassoff ENG 4224-100 Study Questions #1 When someone is in a state of paralysis , the person has lost the ability to move. By definition, paralysis is the result of illness, poison or injury (Oxford American Dictionary). A gnomon , as described in the “Notes” of the novel, is, “the remainder of a parallelogram after removal of a similar parallelogram containing one of its corners” (p.238). In the context of the story, this is the appropriate definition of gnomon because the narrator refers to Euclid’s treatise on geometry. A parallelogram looks like a slanted rectangle with two sides of equal length that are parallel to each other, hence the name. Finally, a simony is described in the “Notes” of the novel as, “the selling or giving in exchange of a temporal thing for a spiritual thing, such as buying a blessing, the purchase of ecclesiastical favour, or of pardons” (p.239).
