24 June 2007 Professor Bruce Bassoff ENG 4224-100 Study Questions # 8 Sasha sees her hotel rooms as escape from the outside world. Sasha’s hotel room is a place to hide from the “wolves.” She says, “I shall exist on a different plane at once if I can get this room, if only for a couple of nights. It will be an omen. Who says you can’t escape from your fate? I’ll escape from mine, into room number 219” (p.37). Sasha is always in a state of extreme solitude within herself and inside of her rooms. She exists in her mind and in her rooms completely isolated from the outside world, avoiding everyone including herself. Sasha is constantly consumed in what she plans on buying and how a material thing is going to save her life. Sasha obsesses over dying her hair, buying a hat, or buying a new dress, and she feels, “If I could get it everything would be different” (p.32). Her purchases are all part of a “transformation act” (p.63) she feels will make her life much better. After she purchases a hat, she is sitting in a café and says, “I feel saner and
