What research methods did Whyte and his research team use to collect data about plazas? - looked at public places such as buildings, civic squares, parks, parking lots, etc. in order to observe how to make an ideal “people place”. Whyte tried to show why some public places work and some don’t, with his observations, he would be able to create this “perfect public place”. 2. What does Whyte say is the primary activity in plazas? - The number one activity is individuals observing other individuals. - Standers who just remain in a stationary position - Girl watchers 3. What is the major finding Whyte discovered from his research on plazas? Capacity is always level. 4. Why should designers not sink or elevate plazas far from street level? - So as many people can be inside as outside; viewed as a landmark, for people to observe at and chat about. - They get lost, and are usually empty if sunken because the action is up on the street
