10/5/2009 Debate 6 Turkey and the European Union I believe that it would be beneficial for the European Union to acquire Turkey for numerous reasons. Europe is one of the most, if not the most multicultural place on earth. To bring in a country with the size of turkey and Islamic view points would only make it even more of a cultural place. According to the geography web unit, the goal of the EU is to "work toward a level of economic and social integration that would make possible the free flow of goods and people across national borders"*. I don’t understand why the EU would not want to adopt Turkey into its multicultural identity. By adopting Turkey in, wouldn’t this help achieve part of the goal concerning economic and social integration as well as free trade between national borders? I believe that it would, however, on the other hand Europe has a great history of world wars that have nearly devastated and split the entire continent. I believe in order to make this work the European Union would clearly devise certain treaties concerning trade and more importantly an agreement of “truce/brotherhood” to avoid hostility amongst countries within the EU. In addition, Turkey is not considered to many critics stable enough to be considered worthy of European Union status. However,
