Informational Influence- produces conformity because a person believes that others are correct in their judgments. o Private Conformity o Sheriff's study Normative Influence- Produces conformity because a person fears the negative social consequences of appearing deviant o Public conformity o Associated with majority influence. o Asch's study Factors Correlated with Majority Influence and How it Works Group Size o When we get as many as 4 people in the majority if you keep adding after that you run into law of diminishing returns- less influence. After 4 the amount you give falls off dramatically. If you add one more will be negligible. Impact of each additional person after 4 is very small. Like light bulbs. Minority individual must see majority as independent of each other. Salience of norms o People need to be aware of what the norm is. The more salient (obvious) the norm the greater the impact it’ll have on behavior.

o In condition with high salience a confederate would pass by and toss garbage. For low salience confederate just walked by. Allies in dissent o Decreases conformity level. Age o Adolescence are more likely to conform to social norms. Gender o The predominant view for along time found that women were more likely to conform. However it depends. Women in general are not mre likely t conform to men whe they’re familiar in topic area. Culture Collectivist are more likely to conform as opposed to individualistic. Minority Influence
