Chapter 3 05/09/2007 09:17:00 The Social Self Three domains (ABC) o A- Affect (emotion) o B- Behavior o C- Cognition Cognition Self-awareness- must recognize your existence independent of the existence  of others.  Humans and great apes appear to be the only species to possess self- awareness.  Gallup’s studies.  Our self concept- the sum total of an individual’s beliefs about his or her own  personality attributes. (the whole constellation of everything) Self-schemas- Beliefs people hold abut themselves that guide the processing  of self-relevant information (they make up the self concept). (Each little dot in  the constellation).  Introspection- looking inward at one’s thoughts and feelings.  Does introspection improve the accuracy of one’s self-knowledge? Nisbett and Schachter (1966) [Schacter two-factor look it up not in class]
