Chap3 12/09/2007 08:42:00 Mechanisms of Self-Enhancement Self-serving Cognitions o We take credit for successes and we blame outside circumstances for  failures.  o Self-handicapping We literally sabotage our own performance in order to provide  an excuse for failure.  o Basking in Reflected Glory (BIRG) Increasing our self-esteem by associating with others who are  successful.  Caveat: Much easier when success of other person is not  something that is self-relevant. o CORF (Cut Off Reflected Failures) (Opposite of BIRG) o Downward Social Comparison- Defensive tendency to compare  ourselves to those who are worst off then themselves. Self-Presentation- The Behavioral Component Self- presentation-> Strategies to influence what others think of us o Strategic Self-Presentation- shape how others see us to get what we  want. Ingratiation

Showing them your strengths in order to influence the opinion o Self- Verification- You want others to see you as you see yourself. If you dont think very well of yourself and you engage in this, you have others think the same of you. o Self-Monitoring- Our tendency to change our behavior in response to the situation in which we find ourselves. Extremes are generally to be avoided. If youre low in self-monitoring youre more likely to engage in self verification.
