Hormone: Insulin Source: B cells in pancreas, water soluble Hormone function at rest: o released after meal in response to rise in blood glucose (to remove glucose from blood) o effect on CHO metabolism promotes glucose uptake in insulin dependant cells (muscle) Glucose— Glycogen synthase—glycogen o effect on Lipid metabolism increases glucose uptake in adipose tissue FFA and triglyceride synthesis enhances triglyceride storage by increasing lipoprotein lipase activity o effect on protein metabolism increases storage of AA into cells stimulates protein synthesis Response to exercise: o Decrease in insulin activity related to decrease in blood glucose levels in order to decrease the amount of glucose picked up by nonactive tissues o Increase blood flow to active muscles during exercise increases delivery of insulin to active tissues even though lower overall insulin Training adaptations: o GLUT4 increases in muscle plasma membrane with endurance training—easier for muscles to extract glucose from blood Hormone: Glucagon Source: alpha cells in pancreas, water soluble Hormone function at rest: o When glucose drops, acts to increase blood
