How important is it for companies such as Nike and Wal-Mart that source extensively from foreign suppliers located in countries where wages are low and substandard working conditions are common to have supplier codes of conduct and to have programs to monitor and ensure supplier compliance with these codes of conduct? It is very important for companies such as Nike and Wal-Mart to have supplier codes of conduct and to have monitoring programs in place. When working with suppliers in countries where wages are low and substandard working conditions are common, large corporations with big names have a lot to lose. For one thing, it is necessary to comply with international human rights laws and codes, if found in violation of these rights companies fear fines, drop in stock prices, and most importantly their integrity and reputation with consumers is challenged. A company’s global brand image is their largest asset and by jeopardizing that image they put the entire company at stake. Companies owe it to their shareholders and consumers to ensure that their products comply with human rights laws and codes and that they maintain a quality standard. Additionally, the practices of company’s suppliers reflect the ethical standards of the company in its home market. 2. Who has the strongest supplier monitoring program—Nike or Wal-Mart? Why? Between Wal-Mart and Nike, Wal-Mart has the stronger supplier monitoring program. The Wal- Mart program includes a code of conduct that includes “compensation, working hour, forced labor, underage labor, discrimination, compliance with applicable national laws and regulations, health and safety practices, environmental abuse, freedom of association and collective bargaining, rights
