    Schizophrenia  Broad array of cognitive and emotional  dysfunctions, including hallucinations  and delusions, disorganized speech and  behavior, inappropriate emotions. Prevalance: about 1% Complete recovery is rare

    DSM-IV Criteria  Two or more of following present for at least  one month (but continuous signs for at least 6  months) along with social/occupational  dysfunction:  -delusions -hallucinations -disorganized speech -grossly disorganized/catatonic behavior -negative symptoms

    Positive Symptoms of  Schizophrenia  Something is there that shouldn’t be Delusions  - of grandeur, of persecution,  irrational beliefs about self or world.   May be adaptive. Hallucinations  - Auditory more common  than visual, olfactory, gustatory, etc.  Broca’s area active.
