How do you define culture? Is it the clothes you wear, the movies you watch, or the music you listen too? Or is it more complicated than that. Is it the politics you believe in, the people you surround yourself with, or the values you base your life around? Culture is all of these. It is in every part of our lives and every decision we make. Culture unifies a society or group of people through their behaviors, beliefs and values, social realms, and material traits of any time or place. Merriam-Webster defines behavior as “the response of an individual, group, or species to its environment.” (MW, 2008). Behavior helps shape culture and in many ways creates subcultures within different environments. Glenn (2008) claims that “although the operants of individuals are functionally independent of one another, the behavior of each person may contribute to a cumulative effect that is relevant to the well-being of many people.” (p.133). Take a classroom for example; if one influential student behaves a specific way they begin to affect the behavior of those around them. This contributes to the cumulative effect of the behavior of others within the classroom. Thus unknowingly a new subculture arises within that classroom
