09/26/08 SKELETAL SYSTEM (chapters 7,8 and 9) - skeletal system divided into axial skeleton (head, vertebral column, rib cage) and apindicular skeleton (appendages and bones or girdles that attach your limbs to your axial skeleton) - fig 7.1, 8.1, and 9.1 are important - born with 270 bones, by the time you’re in mid 20s have 206 AXIAL SKELETON - Head/skull o Cranium- part of the skull that surrounds the brain o 7.4 – pay attention to bones in bold o Sphenoid bone Across behind your eyes, behind eye sockets/ eye balls o Ethmoid bone Between two eyes o Lacrimal bone Two separate bones (left and right) Tears = “lacrimal fluid” o Nasal bone What breaks when you break your nose o Zygomatic bone High cheek bone o Maxilla o Mandible o Vomer Base of the soft part of your nose o Inferior nasal concha In nasal passages have three shells in each one, these are called concha - Facial bones o Bones that collectively form the shape of your face - 7.5 o Frontal bone
