10/01/08 SKELETAL SYSTEM AXIAL SKELETAN LOWE PORTION OF AXIAL SKELETAN - Pelvic girdle o Male vs female Female Wider o provides for enlarged pelvic inlet for giving birth o as women age, add more weight around hips/butt female asitabulum at a different angle than males to facilitate the birth process and give stability for a wider pelvis Male o Hip bone/socket called asitabulum o Hip fracture True hip fracture is where a piece of the pelvis on superior surface just breaks away so that the head of the femur will literally pop out of the asitabulum Older women are most prone to hip fractures. Female hormone estrogen plays a major role in calcium deposition ( plays role in hardness of skeleton), in menopause production of estrogen drastically decreases, this results in pulling more calcium out of bones that you are putting into bones, this increases likelihood that older women will develop osteoporosis. The break occurs, and then she falls. The fall does not cause the break.
