LOWER RESPIRATORY SYSTEM - Larynx o Voicebox / adam’s apple o Look at 25.4 just to get a brief understanding o Made up of 9 or 10 versions of hyaline cartilage o Epiglottis Lid overtop of the larynx o Vocal folds Really vocal ligaments Structures that vibrate as air passes up between them How they vibrate depends on the force of the air and the distance that they are open “Rima-glutinis” = glottis Refers to the space between the vocal folds Lumen of the larynx Vestibular folds Dense regular connective tissue on the lateral sides of the vocal folds o In a situation where the epiglottis didn’t get the larynx closed as you swallow, and a drop of liquid or whatever you’re swallowing gets into your larynx and touches or hits these vocal cords, that initiates coughing and choking reflex o Very important in preventing swallowed material from getting into the respiratory system You cannot let liquid or solid get into larynx because it will bring all kinds of bacteria with it, and you have no way to get
