Psychopathology 2/5/08 Emergency Psychiatry: Most Common- Delirium -Global clouding of consciousness -Acute (sudden, massive change) -Can be dealt with quickly with proper treatment Synonyms of: -Organic brain syndrome -Toxic Psychosis -Acute confusional state Causes: I nfections (esp. elderly) W ithdrawal (alcohol, drugs) – DT’s are an example A cute metabolic changes (diabetes, exertion) T rauma CNS (head injury) H ypoxia (low oxygen) D efencies (vitamins are too low) E ndocrine problems (thyroid issues) A cute vascular changes (heart attacks, blood pressure) T oxins and drugs H eavy metals (pollution) Psychosis Longer term, develops over time Impairments in form and content of thought Inability to distinguish fantasy from reality More common in younger patients Organized/logical psychosis Dementia Tightly focused Can be global or non-global More common in older patients Prevalence increases with time
