William Maurice Instructor: Lisa Foley Substance abuse counseling Winter/Spring Semester NSCC 2007 CHRONIC OFFENDERS IN HOUSE OF CORRECTIONS Well I actually enjoyed reading this packet handout, although it was quite long it had some interesting information in it. I learned a little bit more about programs the house of corrections use to thwart offenders from committing crimes again. The main concern for this article is the use of the RSAT(residential substance abuse treatment) program among offenders with substance abuse problems. “The main goal of the program is to reduce the recidivism of inmates by treating their substance abuse and other criminal behaviors through the development of their cognitive, affective, social and vocational skills”. Now, from what I’ve read it seems to me that the program really works, but I think some would disagree. It says from the studies in 2003 that inmates who completed the RSAT program had a smaller likelihood of re-arrest in the following year than inmates who did not complete the program. “The
