1 The History in Forrest Gump The film Forrest Gump in set in the late 1950’s through the 1970’s. Forrest, who lives a simple life, is the main character in the film Forrest Gump . Forrest lives through many significant historical events. The events he lives through have great impact on United States history, but to Forrest these events are just another day in his life. The events portrayed in Forrest Gump are actual events, and closely follow the order in which they occur. Forrest lives through the changes in foreign policy, society, and politics in the United States during the 1950’s, 1960’s, and 1970’s. Forrest experiences an array of historical events that mark a change in history including the Vietnam War, the hippie movement, and the Watergate Scandal. Truman revamped the foreign policy, which would stay in place for decades. Truman had implemented the “Truman Doctrine”. This doctrine stated that the United States would step-up and “assist other nations that were facing external pressure or intentional revolution” (Goldfield et al., 795). This new policy is what pushed America into getting involved with the Vietnam War two presidents later.
