Lecture 8 Development of the nervous system (Growing a brain) Learn major body axes: Dorsal/Ventral, Anterior/Posterior, Medial/Lateral 2 types of nerve projections Ipsilateral - stay on the same side of brain’s midline Contralateral - crosses the midline of the brain Afferent : neural input to X (projections going to the area you are looking at) Efferent : neural output to X (projections coming to the area you are looking at) remember by ‘E’ ~ Exit ~Efferent Terms for neurons : * Grey matter is the generic term for a group of cell bodies in the brain * Cortex : Flat sheet of cell bodies arranged in layers * Nucleus : Defined group of cell bodies in the brain- well defined group of neurons (in brain and spinal cord) with a defined function * Ganglion : group of cell bodies outside the brain or spinal cord Terms for axons * White matter is the generic term for axons in the brain * Nerve : group outside of the brain that share a common starting point and a common ending point * Tract : group inside of the brain with common end points * Bundles : group in brain, not necessarily with the same start/end points * Commissure (decussation) : group that crosses the brain’s midline Planes of Section * saggittal - the cut goes rostral to caudal, perpendicular to the ground. If it goes through the midline it is midsaggital * Horizontal - cut parallel with the ground resulting in a dorsal and ventral half * Coronal - cut in center to result in rostral and caudal halves GENERAL ORGANIZATION CNS : Brain and Spinal Cord Areas of the brain * Cerebrum- 2 halves, cerebral hemispheres, cognitive- most projections to and from brain are contra lateral (left hand-right brain) * Cerebellum (little brain)- motor control, smaller than cerebrum but has the same number of neurons
