Ans42 Jan 16 Communication - Visual ( including “displays” ) - Olfactory - Tactile - Verbal / auditory Communication – the transmission of information that alters the receivers’ behavior Stereotypic visual communication – display - cat – tail up , back arched, mouth back - lizard – “pushups” on rocks - birds – very specific visual communication to display aggressive behavior, but differs between species o penguin – aggressive = leans forward and close to ground o another bird species – aggressive = stand up tall, puff up. - Some species will know what it means while others don’t. so it’ll be misinterpreted o Look at handout o Human – happy o Chimp – fear. o Wolf – aggression Therefore, it is important how humans interact w/ a companion animal because they need to know what they are saying to the animal through their visual communications and understand what the animal is saying back to us. -
