SEIZURES Abnormal, recurring, uncontrolled electrical discharges in the brain. TYPES 1. Simple Partial – Only a finger or hand may shake Or mouth may jerk uncontrollably Speech may be unintelligible May experience dizziness May experience unusual sights, sounds, odors or tastes No loss of consciousness 2. Complex Partial Either motionless or moves automatically (inappropriate) Experiences emotions of fear, anger, elation or irritability No memory of episode 3. Partial which moves to Generalized 4. Generalized (grand mal) Involves both hemispheres of the brain Both sides of body react Increased rigidity (tonic) Contract and relax (clonic) Tongue, lip or gum often bitten Incontinent of urine/stool 1-4 minutes subsides after relaxes, coma like state, breathing deeply postictal – confused, hard to awake, sleep for hours or agitated.
