Ch 22 Social Responses and Personality Disorders *classic characteristics of health relatedness: open communication of feelings, acceptance of other person as valued and separate, empathic understanding *to become intimately involved with a person, individual must be willing to risk reveal private thoughts and feelings *people who have extreme difficulty intimacy maybe exhibit characteristic of personality disorder Continuum of Social Responses *intimate & interdependent relationships provide security and self-confidence neded to cope with daily life demands *lack of intimacy w/ family members/friends leaves superficial encounters excluding life’s most meaningful experiences *relatedness analyzed based on levels of involvement, comfort, well-being -connectedness: indicates a person is actively involved in satisfying relationship -disconnectedness: lack of involvement not satisfactory to the person -parallelism: lack of involvement that is comfortable and acceptable to individual -enmeshment: person is involved in relationships but unable to maintain unique sense of self and ego boundaries *connectedness involves high levels of belonging, mututality, reciprocity, interdependence Adaptive and Maladaptive Responses *behaviors in relationships are balanced and interdependence = a person can rely on others and when to be independent or let another be dependent or independent without needing to control their behavior *adaptive social responses includes ability to tolerate solitude, express autonomy, mutuality, and interdependence *interpersonal relationship behaviors may be presented on a continuum ranging from healthy interactions to involving no real contact with others, and at the midpoint a person experiences loneliness, withdrawal, dependence. Maladaptive end of continuum reflects dominance of manipulation, impulsiveness, and narcissism. Maladaptive people= problems with relationships, job, socially wtf is a continuum range?   Development Through the Life Cycle *personality shaped by biology and social learning and if it becomes healthy or pathologic depending on nature, timing, interactions of these influences *personality is “temperament”-hereditary dispositions affect mood/activity level, attention span, responsiveness to stimuli. Infancy: birth to 3 months, baby does not perceive physical separation b/t self & mom *physical differentiation occurs about 3 months, psychological differentiation begin 18 months *period b/t 3 and 18 months is symbiotic stage of development-infant dependent on others. Trust develops as needs met consistently/predictably, loving, accepting Preschool Years: b/t 18 months and 3 years is age of separation-individuation stage *separation: all experiences, events, achievements promoting self-differentiation and sense of being separate and unique *individuation: evolution of internal psychological structure and growing sense of separateness, wholeness, capability *at this stage, toddler ventures away from mom and explore sense of object constancy
