Netflix Case Study Netflix is the most widely known DVD and Movie service In the recent years this company has endured fluctuations in their revenues because of successes from other companies Video streaming emerged and was deemed more preferable than mailing DVDs How did Netflix use technology to gain and maintain a competitive advantage against their competition? o Collaborative filtering Seeks to customize the viewing experience for each individual user They do this by prompting a user to write a show they have recently watched and how often they watch, genres etc Encourage users to rate movies and “Tastes Preferences” In early days of Netflix o The long tail – Netflix offered their customers over 125,000 unique DVD titles o They then transferred to “the long enough tail” Netflix no longer focused on carrying as many titles as possible, but consistently having something for everyone Netflix also uses economies of scale to its advantage o
