Julia Alvarez employs a variety of literary devices in order to further the development of the message, such as Romance, Conflict and Dialect.Through these devices she succeeded in captivating the Reader and developing her message. Throughout the novel Julia shows the roaring and war-ing of the successful and unsuccessful romances that brewed in The de la Torre Family to help formulate the message. Fifi or Sofia for example was the child who displayed the most of a rebellious phase, having been torn between her Dominican Culture and her upbringing in America where self independence trumps the Dominican Style where women have little to no say or voice.
