Page 1 Tim Squire Menon English 1101 December 7, 2006 Morality: It is time to be freed Every human on this planet faces the same questions throughout our lives. These dilemmas are not as light as feathers, nor are they simple enough for a toddler to overcome. These problems plague the minds of philosophers and have bewildered the first humans making the journey out of Africa. They are the ultimate of mind-bogglers, the epitome of inquiry, the first gifts of our existence. Who am I? What am I? What is this beautiful place that I have found myself living in? Where did all this life come from, this life that differs from jellyfish to eagles? What created this turquoise waterfall, as the majestic and tiny crystals splash upon the impact of one another? An overwhelming amount of answers have been created based off the culture that asked the question, all unique and different in so many ways. Disputes about these answers have been around as long as the answers themselves. As humanity has progressed, we have been able to objectively explain the phenomena that had previously bewildered us. It is a shining light to the majority of us, and is responsible for an enormous amount of acceptable deeds. People trace their moral virtues to religion, and their texts or lore. The Bible and the Koran are to be held accountable for their follower’s outlook on life. However, these sacred texts are filled with horrendously immoral teachings. Richard Dawkin’s explains in The God Delusion : The god from the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all of fiction. Jealous and proud of it, a petty unjust unforgiving control freak; A vindictive bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser, a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic capriciously malevolent bully. When one thinks of the vast amount of people who claim to follow one of the three major religions in the world, Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, one must understand that all three of them believe they have ancestry through Abraham, as well as sharing tradition through the prophets (http://www.centerce.org/ISLAM/ChristianComparisonAndEvaluation.htm).
