Chapter 5 The Verbal Dimension of Communication Symbols and Meanings Symbols are Arbitrary Arbitrary- not intrinsically connected to what they represent They many meanings of gay Symbols are Ambiguous Ambiguous- their meaning are not clear cut or fixed Dog=4-legged creature + all our experiences with them Symbols are Abstract Abstract- not concrete or tangible – stand for ideas, people, events, objects, feelings and so forth. Principles of Verbal Communication Interpretation Creates Meaning Communication is Rule Guided Communication rules- shared understandings of what communication means and what kinds of communication are and are not appropriate in various situations. Regulative rules- specify when, how, where and with whom to talk about certain things When is it appropriate to interrupt parents, friends, co-workers? What topics are appropriate during family dinner conversations? With whom can u talk about personal issues? With whom do you talk about money problems?
