Introduction The pulse, pea or bean family formerly leguminaseae family An important family in the context of human nutrition Provides sources of oil and protein which are not found in other plant families The roots of plants in this family have the ability to extract and fix atmospheric nitrogen This ability is due to the activity of the bacteria in the genus Rhizobium which live symbiotically with the plant roots This phenomenon provides an advantage to plants in this family that allows for their establishment on soils which have low N reserves.
