Conservation of Mechanical Energy E= mv 2 +mgh 2. Momentum p=mv Apparatus: Photogate timer Spring gun Pendulum and ball Cardboard box Procedure: 1. Find the speed of the ball before the collision using the photogate timer. Position the photogate timer so that the center of the ball intercepts the beam. 2. Press the spring gun to have the ball pass through the laser beam of the photogate timer from the center to get the time. Set timer to 0 and release spring gun. This will give you the speed of the ball before the collision. 3. Measure how high the combination swings before coming to rest. 4. The ball will hit the pendulum in the process of collision. 5. Find the speed of the ball before and after the collision using Equations 6.1 and 6.2.
