Sylwester Czado 12-17-07 KIN 278, Journal Question #3 One idea that I learned in this course which influenced me is how I think about social class. Specifically, I learned the idea of sport and physical activity as contested terrains of social class interests in American society. This is usually a place where various social classes struggle against each other to promote their class interests. Organized sports are socially constructed in ways which promote the ideological and economic interests of upper classes. Economic status is one’s income or wealth which can be inherited. Sports are constructed to reinforce capitalist values which serve the interests of the wealthy. Examples of capitalist values are competition, individualism, and meritocracy. I recognized this idea when I went to the Boston Celtics basketball game this past week. I have gone to the TD Banknorth Garden a couple times to see concerts and a Celtics game. All those times that I went I sat in the Balcony seats which are the cheapest. This time, however, my friend and I bought Loge seats which are closer than
