Sylwester Czado 12-3-07 KIN 278, Journal Question #2 Gender is a socially constructed set of ideas about the perceived capabilities and expected behaviors of men and women. Just because I am a male does not mean that I perform masculine behaviors. However, I find myself, for the most part, performing traditional gender ideologies. I have observed, through my behaviors, that I believe in the traditional gender ideology of how men should be strong, active, dominating, and superior. One example of how I perform my gender identity is when I go to a classroom and sit down at my seat. I sit with my feet out in the open and stretched out. I am slouched and not sitting up. I observe that I occupy a lot more space than necessary. Throughout this action, I perform my gender identity by trying to be powerful. Through masculinity, I am demonstrating possessive characteristics. I have observed that I only do this when I’m in a public place, such as a classroom. This behavior is derived from society as well as, my peers in school.
