Film Music 355 – Chapter 1 Notes - Functions of Music o To intensify the pace of the film or is used to relax the pace of the film Ex. Jaws – John Williams Ostinato – A repeated pattern in music Ex. Carrie o To reflect emotion Ex. Somewhere in Time – John Barry o To create unspoken thoughts of a character or unseen implications of a situation o To parallel the actions Whatever is happening on the screen, the music does the same Ex. Somebody runs up the stairs and the music goes up in pitch Called “mickey-mousing” the actions Ex. Ben-Hur Slaves rowing in the ship, as the rowing speeds change, the music parallels the action o To create atmosphere of time and place Makes you believe you’re in a certain location or in a certain time o To create comedy When you take music out of context and put it in another subject matter where it doesn’t belong to make it comedic o To provide unity from one film to the next
