Purpose/Nature of Politics -harmonize competing interests - class conflict -to realize some moral purpose * to achieve salvation *to enhance development of all people 2. Origin of Government- where does it come from -created by God (daned by) to provide order to helpless mortals -in a social contract created by all people in a state of nature -power created government -originated in a historical past-anthropologist/professors believe this idea *elders in society serving as a council 3. What is the Source of Political Authority? – right to govern -power -God -the social contract -knowledge/expertise-from Plato to Lenin -from the people (our tradition) (popular sovereignty) 4. Who Governs/Who Should? -single individual-king or emperor
