A Powerful Decision Within the branches of American government, power struggles between the executive and legislative are certainly nothing new. In a world where the framers of the Constitution are long gone, party lines are severely blurred, and paramount decisions must be made on a daily basis- who should hold the key to the government? Based on my own knowledge, I believe, given the option, Congress should be allowed a greater number of powers than the president. In today’s time, the president is simply too detached from the American people. The president serves as a representative for our entire nation , but has very little knowledge of each individual state’s needs. Congress, however, is able to operate more closely with the states because representatives from each state who are interested in the common welfare of his or her individual states. Thurber discusses this in his essay, saying: “Members of Congress…represent specific interests that can conflict with the interests of the president, who represents the nation as a whole” (127).
