As early as 1685, ten years after the Thirty Years' War, a city gate stood in this place, forming part of the then city wall.Attheendofthe 18th century, itwasthe then king of Prussia king, Friedrich Wilhelm II, who fancied an imposing conclusion to the avenue Unter den Linden.
