Unformatted text preview: Greek Mythology Notes 01/06/09 Mythologia- study of stories Mythology provides validity in society Myth does not mean its false Athena o Daughter of wisdom and strategic warfare o Brother: Ares God of bloody disgusting war o Herakles (Hercules) Demigod: one of parents was a mortal Brute strength Had 12 tasks o Aphrodite Goddess of love, sexuality (known as Venus) o Zeus Father of Gods and men Father of Olympians God of thunderstorms (the sky) Turns into form of eagle o Dionysis God of wine, partying Has a dark side: can completely lose control You cant deny him or bad things will happen to you o Hermes Messenger God, he is a thief as well Winged feet Travels between Heaven and earth, and the earth and the underworld o Poseidon God of the sea o Haydes God of underworld, but is not the devil or a bad guy o Hephaestus Walks with a limp Married to Aphrodite God of blacksmith, makes armor for Gods Resides in a volcano o Achilles (hero) o Odysseus (hero) o Jason (hero) o Perseus (hero) 01/12/09 Monotheistic- one god Polytheistic- many gods; some gods have better/different powers Hermes Shrewd; cleverness Makes the lyre; he is creative He steals stealing of the cows from Apollo o He is clever in stealing the cows Made shoes that concealed his footprints o So Apollo could not see his footprints Has no problem lying Son of Zeus and Maia Swore to Zeus that he did not steal Apollos cows Zeus greatest of gods Maia nymph: divine but more than human (mortal) Apollo- god of the lyre o Got it from Hermes and immediately knows how to play it. Hermes creates fire Permethes is the first to give humans fire Hermes makes steaks out of the cows but does not eat them Pg. 31 when he has the meat but does not eat it o Immortals were not supposed to want or eat meat Gods eat ambrosia and drink nectar By wanting the meat, Hermes has human-like qualities Pg. 35 argument with Apollo o Hermes is the god of robbers Apollo is surprised when Hermes (as a baby) has all these bodily noises (burps, sneezes) Hermes is a god of boundaries (crosses or straddles them) Messenger (herald): brings messages from different places Hermes brings messages from Olympus to the people o Also leads souls of humans from the living to the dead Gods dont dream Aphrodite Sleeps w/ Anchises (mortal) o Has a son named Aeneas She loses self control Feels humble by sleeping with a human Has a power over all other gods except for 3 gods o Cannot have power over herself Bottom pg. 48 gods usually dont have shame o Aphrodite has shame from mating with a mortal She disguises herself from Anchises o But he recognizes her and thinks she is immortal o It is a good thing that he recognizes her o Epiphany When a god reveals him/herself 1.
