LAWSO 1 Introduction to Law and Society Fall 2008 Dr. Lisa Hajjar lhajjar@lawso.ucsb.edu This course has three related objectives: 1) to introduce students to the interdisciplinary field of Law and Society and socio-legal scholarship; 2) to provide instruction about key socio-legal concepts, including rights, equality, discrimination, justice and punishment; and 3) to foster students’ analytical and critical skills to understand the importance and the limits of law. Course format: LAWSO 1 is a lecture course with discussion sections led by a teaching assistant. The curriculum includes scholarship, court decisions, and movies that illustrate some of the key concepts in this interdisciplinary field. You are responsible for all of the materials covered during the quarter . The sections will be used for small-group discussions about the readings and lectures. Quizzes on the week’s readings will be given on Tuesdays in lecture, starting week 3; no make-ups. You are expected to prepare by reading the assigned materials before the Tuesday class.
