Week 2: Sociological Competence Key Concepts/Ideas:  Practical Sociological Competence:  A quality of human resilience and intelligence, a  practical capacity to understand what’s happening around us and to form and keep social  relations with others. Not the trained competence of the professional sociologist but a  commonly held skill of ordinary people and thus an important feature of social life itself.  Social Facts : Social facts are things that are social in nature; social realities external to  the individual.  Disciplined or Practiced Sociological Competence:  The accurate and effective exercise of  the sociological imagination in order to formulate, address, and contribute to solving  pressing social problems in which cherished values are at stake.  Research : The process by which we systematically answer questions.  To re-search is to  search for knowledge.
